The evolution of LGPS approaches to climate change risk
Brunel Investment Principal Private Markets Gillian De Candole participated in a recent LGPS roundtable hosted by Room 151. Other panellists included Rachel Elwell, chief executive of Border to Coast Pensions Partnership. Abigail Leech of Lancashire County Pension Fund, Jo Ray of Lincolnshire County Council, Bola Tobun of London Borough of Enfield and Bridget Uku of London Borough of Ealing.
The roundtable discussion was chaired by Moira Gorman, client relationship & sales director at Columbia Threadneedle. The focus was the developing challenge of climate change risk, and how investment approaches are adapting to manage thesee risks.
Gillian spoke about our expectations of asset managers and how we go about ensuring ESG considerations are fully integrated across their processes: “You can ask for and receive evidence. (…) You can also measure trends over time. It’s incredibly useful when you are looking at managers, and they say they are doing great things. They might score very well on some metrics, and then you look at their carbon footprint and you are like: “Tell me why? Where is this coming from?” Then you can break it down into individual stocks and dig deeper.”
