International property: achieving Zero Carbon

Prologis have developed a building in the Netherlands that is the world’s first industrial building to receive “Zero Carbon” from its construction phase through its use over the next 50 years (accredited by International Living Future Institute).

The generation of onsite solar energy exceeds the amount needed to power the facility, so much so that the total emissions from the building’s construction will have been offset by 2030.

A range of innovative sustainability features include:

  • Integrated all-electric heating system
  • Contaminated soil from this former waste dump was removed and now features walking trails through ecological, nature-inclusive landscaping and measures to stimulate biodiversity, such as insect hotels, bird houses and native plants
  • Use of local suppliers during construction to lower transport carbon emissions
  • Using certified lower carbon concrete
  • Cradle-to-cradle low emission, recycled and biobased building materials

The site has received BREEAM Outstanding and WELL Gold certificates
